Today, I have come to speak to the warrior in you. When I think of warriors in the Bible, I think of two warriors. The first warrior that I think of is the Lord God himself. In the book of Exodus, Moses declared that the Lord is a man of war. The second warrior that comes to mind was David. This particular warrior David was the man in whom God said was “after his own heart.” The story of David vs. Goliath reveals to us the mentality of a warrior. As I was studying the mentality of David, the first attribute that I was able to recognize was his confidence. After Goliath challenged the armies of Israel, you could hear the confidence streaming from the mouth of David as he said “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God.” David’s confidence was so strong that this giant named Goliath was nothing to him. David says, “Who is this Philistine?” I can hear David saying, “Hey Giant, I know God, and you are nothing compared to him. I have so much faith in God, that even giants are nothing to me! This is something that we can learn from David. Problems that are causing others to fear should be nothing to you. Don’t let the doctor’s report paralyze you in fear, because our God is too strong. Let your faith be so strong that even if God chooses not to bring you out of your situation here on earth, your love and faith in God will still be unwavering. The negative things that people say about me will not cause me run away and hide, because I am a warrior in the armies of the living God. Secondly, the warrior must be prepared in order to kill a Goliath. The warriors are able to prepare themselves through rigorous training. God himself prepares us through testing. We are to conquer a number of battles before facing off with the giants in our future, and sometimes these battles don’t seem important. Sometimes the assignments on your way to Goliath seem small, but they are very important. Before God sent David to fight Goliath, David had the daily task of taking care of his father’s sheep. Yes, David was a shepherd boy. This job as a shepherd is symbolic of humble beginnings, and sometimes we take our humble beginnings for granted. Although this assignment does not seem to be important, it was during David’s time as a shepherd boy that killed a lion. It was during his time as a shepherd boy that killed a bear. As a warrior, you cannot afford to take any assignments for granted. Warriors don’t take any battles lightly. We approach each mission with one hundred percent, even when the mission requires that we watch sheep. Even if it requires working a part time job. Even if it requires working as a janitor to make ends meet. Every battle is important. Remember, that Goliath is coming. How can you kill Goliath, when you refuse to watch the sheep?!! How can you save the entire nation of Israel, when you can’t save the sheep from the lion. Conquer the small battles. Master the small assignments. Because your giant is coming, and he’s gotta die. Lastly and most importantly, the warrior must be able to have focus. David was focused on God. It was during David’s time as a shepherd boy that he was able to focus on his relationship with God. It was during this time that he learned to trust God. This was the time that David spent intimate time with the very God whose name he would defend in battle. The warrior must be able to still away and focus on why they do what they do. For David, everything that he did at this point was for God. Why is it that you do what you do? Some of you may not be able to answer this question. But I have come to tell you that If God is the reason you fight, you will be the reason why God fights. Warriors of the living God it is time to fight!
